Stinky Silk Woes (pic)

Argh, here's a picture of that Stinky Silk Snafoo. I mean, it doesn't look horrible, but nevertheless, it's NOT the color I was looking for, nor is it a color that I like. I have to muster enough energy to try and redo this. However, I first have to get over the disappointment and stinky smell which is now etched in my smell-cells' memory.

Where did you get the yarn from? In my experience, if a silk yarn won't take dye, it's because it isn't actually silk at all.... A lot of the yarn that passes for silk is actually rayon. Because your yarn is a blend, doing a burn test isn't going to help much. I suggest you try dyeing it with a reactive dye - if that works, then the yarn definitely isn't silk.

Dee, Ok,reactive dye is something that I have not tried. I had also thought that b/c the yarn is half wool, wouldn't at least part of it soak up dye the way wool does? I got the yarn from a fairly reliable source, Newton's, which normally sells mostly machine knitting yarns. I will try the reactive dye, but the yarn really does smell like silk, esp. when wet. Thanks!

Hmm, well if it smells like silk then that's not the problem. Try soaking it in vinegar water overnight before dyeing, instead of adding vinegar to the dye solution.
